EDUCATION

The Northeastern Nevada Museum Children’s Education Department works with area schools to help meet certain school education standards.  Some of the programs offered to the schools are as follows:

Pioneer Life

pioneer lifeStudents learn about the ways of life for a pioneer child.  Students watch a 20 minute video about pioneer life and then learn to make butter, cornhusk dolls, button toys, write with a quill pen and how to pack a wagon with the necessities that would be needed if on the trail.

Indian Baskets

indian basketsStudents learn about the Indians that lived and still live in Northeastern Nevada.  Students will see many different baskets that the Indians used in their day to day living.  Next students will experience making a basket of their own to take home and share with their family and friends.

Mastodon

MastadonSpeakers from the BLM that were involved in the Mastodon dig come in and speak to the students about the dig.  Students will watch a slide show that shows how the Mastodon was unearthed and how the exhibit at the Museum was built.  Following the slide show students have the opportunity to make a fossil of their own using a mold made from a real Mastodon tooth.  The students really enjoy making their own fossil.

Education Trunk Program

The Education Trunk program works with teacher’s to package a trunk filled with items on the topic being studied.

How the program works:

  • The teacher informs the Museum of the topic of study.  The Museum gathers items and fills a trunk on the stated topic.  The teacher then returns to check out the trunk and take it back to their school.  The trunk stays on-site at the school for however long it is needed.  The teacher then returns the trunk when the study topic has been completed.
  • The aforementioned programs are just a sampling of what the Museum offers.  All existing programs can also be tailored to suit any need.  If there is not an suitable existing program, one can be created for your educational needs.

Will James Book Gifting Program

The Northeastern Nevada Museum recently started the Book Gifting Program through the Will James Society.  For each set of books purchased through the Will James Society an additional set will be donated to a school library.  The Elko County School District has been contacted for a list of libraries that would be interested in receiving a set of the Will James books.  The Museum delivered all of the books to the local and rural schools in Elko County and the schools have been delighted to have them. If anyone would like to receive more information please click here or contact Barbara Warwick, Secretary of the Will James Society at 928-468-2427. This is a really great program to get into.
These projects are funded, in part, by a grant from the Nevada Arts Council, a division of the Department of Cultural Affairs, and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.
