Spring Creek Mastodon

Mastadon boneBones from a 2 million-year-old American mastodon were discovered in nearby Spring Creek, Nevada in 1994 by a construction company digging a trench. The excavation and study of the fossilized remains resulted in a permanent exhibit at the Museum built and donated by the Weigand Foundation.

Today, Murray the Mastodon as he is endearing known to the Museum staff, is the source of many field trips to the Museum!

Halleck Bar

Halleck BarSuch a popular exhibit, the Museum has named an entire art gallery after this historical relic. The Halleck Bar is an antique bar and back-bar that has been on display at the Northeastern Nevada Museum since 1970. It was first installed in a “social establishment” in near by Halleck, Nevada in 1916. When the bar closed in 1970, the building and all of its contents were abandoned. Two Halleck ranchers, Art & Norm Glaser, who had patronized the bar... a couple of times, along with Charles “Chach” Evans, restored the bar and donated it to the Museum to be on permanent display.

The donors of the bar gave it to the Museum with one stipulation, each year there is to be a celebration commemorating the bar and good times gone by. At that moment “The Halleck Bar Party” was born. Each year in March, Beefeater Gin, which was a favorite of the Glasers, is served over the bar to a large crowd of supporters of the Museum. It has become one of the social events of the year in Elko County and is a wonderful opportunity for the members of the Northeastern Nevada Historical Society

History and Geology

The History and Geology galleries at the Northeastern Nevada Museum feature an extensive antique firearms collection, the original press of the local newspaper, the Elko Daily Free Press, GS Garcia saddles, and countless historical artifacts including clothing, furniture, machines, dishes, kitchenware, war memorabilia, and much more. There is a chronological exhibit of Nevada’s history. Also featured are cultural artifacts including Native American and Basque heritage. Major Elko County industries such as ranching, mining, gaming and railroads are highlighted. Geology and natural history of the area are also on exhibit.

Recent historical exhibits have been added to the gallery such as the Jarbidge Shovel Brigade in 2000. Project Lifesaver was a historical event that resulted in the moving of the Central Pacific Railroad out of town to a safer location. Bing Crosby lived part of the time on his ranch north of Elko. He was so loved by the local citizens that they named him Elko’s honorary mayor, a title which he cherished until his death. Several artifacts including his Levi tuxedo are on exhibit.

Ansel Easton Adams (1902 – 1984)
From the Collection of Earl and Genevieve Frantzen

Ansel Adams was an American photographer and environmentalist, best known for his black-and-white photographs of the American West, especially in Yosemite National Park.

With Fred Archer, Adams developed the Zone System as a way to determine proper exposure and adjust the contrast of the final print. The resulting clarity and depth characterized his photographs and the work of those to whom he taught the system, this system forever changed the art of photography.

Adams founded the Group f/64 along with fellow photographers Edward Weston and Imogen Cunningham, which in turn created the Museum of Modern Art’s department of photography. In the course of his 60-year career, he received numerous titles, accolades and honors. Most notably in 1980 Jimmy Carter awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor.

Today he is still known as the most famous American Photographer of all time.

A Survey of Nevada Art

Jessie Hylton Dewar 1891-1979

Jessie Hylton Dewar was born February 23, 1891 in Elko, the daughter of John Jesse and Lena K. Garracht Hylton.  Her parents were pioneer Elko County ranchers with one of the largest ranch holdings in northern Nevada.  She married Archie Dewar March 18, 1922. She and her husband were lifelong residents of Elko County where they were ranchers, civic volunteers, and among the founders of the Northeastern Nevada Historical Society.

Jessie was a noted artist and studied at the University of Nevada and the Pratt Institute of Art in New York City.  She went on the teach art in Georgia before returning to Elko County.  She continued painting and was noted for her renditions of quaking aspen in all settings and all seasons.  Her paintings are treasured by all those who own them, including the Museum which currently has seven in the permanent collection.

Wanamaker Wildlife Exhibit

Wanamaker Wing

Added to the museum in 1999, the Wanamaker Wildlife Wing contains Nevada’s largest collection of wild animals from around the world. A majority of the collection which was donated by Jack and Francis Wanamaker is exhibited in a natural setting. Approximately 300 animals are on exhibit. This exhibit includes Nevada Mountain which is covered with animals all native to Nevada and the Great Basin. There are also animals from Africa, the Arctic, Australia, Asia, and all over North America.

The Wanamaker collection is a source of pride for the community and many people’s only chance to see some very interesting creatures.
