Spring Creek Mastodon

Mastadon boneBones from a 2 million-year-old American mastodon were discovered in nearby Spring Creek, Nevada in 1994 by a construction company digging a trench. The excavation and study of the fossilized remains resulted in a permanent exhibit at the Museum built and donated by the Weigand Foundation.

Today, Murray the Mastodon as he is endearing known to the Museum staff, is the source of many field trips to the Museum!

Halleck Bar

Halleck BarSuch a popular exhibit, the Museum has named an entire art gallery after this historical relic. The Halleck Bar is an antique bar and back-bar that has been on display at the Northeastern Nevada Museum since 1970. It was first installed in a “social establishment” in near by Halleck, Nevada in 1916. When the bar closed in 1970, the building and all of its contents were abandoned. Two Halleck ranchers, Art & Norm Glaser, who had patronized the bar... a couple of times, along with Charles “Chach” Evans, restored the bar and donated it to the Museum to be on permanent display.

The donors of the bar gave it to the Museum with one stipulation, each year there is to be a celebration commemorating the bar and good times gone by. At that moment “The Halleck Bar Party” was born. Each year in March, Beefeater Gin, which was a favorite of the Glasers, is served over the bar to a large crowd of supporters of the Museum. It has become one of the social events of the year in Elko County and is a wonderful opportunity for the members of the Northeastern Nevada Historical Society

History and Geology

The History and Geology galleries at the Northeastern Nevada Museum feature an extensive antique firearms collection, the original press of the local newspaper, the Elko Daily Free Press, GS Garcia saddles, and countless historical artifacts including clothing, furniture, machines, dishes, kitchenware, war memorabilia, and much more. There is a chronological exhibit of Nevada’s history. Also featured are cultural artifacts including Native American and Basque heritage. Major Elko County industries such as ranching, mining, gaming and railroads are highlighted. Geology and natural history of the area are also on exhibit.

Recent historical exhibits have been added to the gallery such as the Jarbidge Shovel Brigade in 2000. Project Lifesaver was a historical event that resulted in the moving of the Central Pacific Railroad out of town to a safer location. Bing Crosby lived part of the time on his ranch north of Elko. He was so loved by the local citizens that they named him Elko’s honorary mayor, a title which he cherished until his death. Several artifacts including his Levi tuxedo are on exhibit.

Wanamaker Wildlife Exhibit

Wanamaker Wing

Added to the museum in 1999, the Wanamaker Wildlife Wing contains Nevada’s largest collection of wild animals from around the world. A majority of the collection which was donated by Jack and Francis Wanamaker is exhibited in a natural setting. Approximately 300 animals are on exhibit. This exhibit includes Nevada Mountain which is covered with animals all native to Nevada and the Great Basin. There are also animals from Africa, the Arctic, Australia, Asia, and all over North America.

The Wanamaker collection is a source of pride for the community and many people’s only chance to see some very interesting creatures.
