About Us
Located in the heart of Elko, Nevada, the Northeastern Nevada Museum is the region’s premier cultural and historical center—dedicated to the preservation, research, and education of Northeastern Nevada’s art, history, and wildlife. Constructed in 1968, the museum was built on the vision of local families who believed the stories of our region deserved to be protected and shared.
From its beginnings as the Northeastern Nevada Historical Society, the museum has grown into one of the most respected small museums in the West—home to thousands of artifacts, artworks, and archival materials that celebrate the cultures, history, and landscapes that define this corner of Nevada.
Our Mission
The Northeastern Nevada Museum is the premier cultural and historical center for preservation, research, and education in Northeastern Nevada. The museum maintains a quality facility dedicated to serving the area and its visitors by providing comprehensive archives and collections, diverse history and art exhibits, research facilities, and a welcoming community gathering space.
A Museum Built by the Community
The museum’s story began in 1956, when the Northeastern Nevada Historical Society was founded by families who recognized the importance of preserving local history. Twelve years later, the museum opened its doors—becoming the first official museum in Elko.
Today, that same community spirit continues to thrive. The Northeastern Nevada Museum remains a nonprofit organization supported by donations, memberships, and volunteers who share a passion for art, history, and heritage. Every exhibit, educational program, and special event is a reflection of the people who live, work, and create in our region - the Northern Nevada Counties of Elko, Eureka, Humboldt, Lander and White Pine.
Our dedicated staff is here to help you explore and connect with Elko’s history—meet our team to get in touch.
